International Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine Day – 13th November!

November 13th 2023, we celebrate for the first time the International Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine Day around the world. This is a global healthcare event that will be observed every year. We count on your help to celebrate it, make it known in your local community and highlight Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine goals and achievements.

It was on this day, 24 years ago, in 1999, that the International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (ISPRM) was born, as result of the merger of the International Rehabilitation Medicine Association (IRMA) and the International Federation of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (IFPMR). By instituting this date, we honor, first of all, our Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine pioneers that bravely set up the foundations of the most important medical organization concerning international rehabilitation medicine.

This year also marks the historic WHO Resolution on “Strengthening Rehabilitation in the Health Systems”. Its major goal is to integrate rehabilitation into health systems worldwide, thus improving the well-being and socio-economic participation of those in need and we believe that celebrating the International Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine Day will help emphasize all the objectives stated in this resolution.

The International Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine Day is an important opportunity to raise awareness about the profound impact that Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine has for people around the world, with health conditions experiencing disability or likely to experience disability. This important date serves as an advocacy tool to educate the public on Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine and to mobilize the political will and commitment of governments and institutions.

The Day offers a chance for us all to talk about our work, and what more needs to be done to make Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine access a reality for people worldwide.
