Definition of “Experts” and “Centers of Excellence”
Expert is a physiatrist;
i. who -in addition to significant background/education- has been (and is still) actively performing musculoskeletal ultrasound (diagnostic and interventional) in daily clinical practice and,
ii. who also has been (and is still) publishing on the aforementioned topics.
From the practical point of view, minimum years of expertise and number of publications (as regards musculoskeletal US) can be taken as 5 and 20 (published in international journals indexed in PubMed and Web of Science), respectively.
Center of Excellence is one;
i. where there is at least one (actively working) expert and,
ii. where there is at least one (currently functioning) ultrasound machine.
III. Definition of “Trainers” and “Training Centers”
Trainer is a physiatrist;
i. who is already an expert as defined above or,
ii. who has completed the three steps of ultrasound training i.e. beginner, intermediate and advanced as described below.
Training Center is one;
i. which is already a center of excellence as defined above or,
ii. where there is at least one (actively working) trainer and at least one (currently functioning) ultrasound machine.
IV. Curriculum for the Ultrasound Training
Basic level
Participants/graduates are expected to recognize;
i. normal ultrasonographic appearance of the six main joints and,
ii. nearby anatomical structures.4-11
Intermediate level
Participants/graduates are expected to recognize;
i. pathologies of the aforementioned joints/structures and limbs and,
ii. to perform related interventions.12-21
Advanced level
Participants/graduates are expected to recognize;
i. normal and pathologic appearance of the head, neck and trunk
ii. to perform related interventions.22-30
