Exploring Gender Medicine in Rehabilitation: Initiatives from the ISPRM Gender Medicine Task Force
At the #ISPRM2024 congress in Sydney, Professor Areerat Suputtitada from Thailand, the chair of the ISPRM Gender Medicine Task Force (2024-2025), shared the ambitious plans of her committee to enhance the understanding and application of gender medicine in rehabilitation. This task force is set to explore and address critical gender differences in pain, neurorehabilitation, and cardiovascular rehabilitation.
Filling the Gaps in Clinical Practice
Professor Suputtitada emphasized the need to fill existing gaps in clinical practice when it comes to gender-specific approaches in rehabilitation medicine. “We are focusing on gender differences in pain management, neurorehabilitation, and cardiovascular rehabilitation,” she explained. The goal is not just to advance clinical understanding but also to create opportunities for discussions and collaborative research within the task force and with the ISPRM Research Committee.
Engaging the Global Rehabilitation Community
The task force plans to foster international collaboration through clinical experience sharing, joint discussions, and research efforts. Additionally, they intend to create a series of short communications that highlight gender differences in these key areas. These communications will feature interviews with committee members who are experts in pain, neurorehabilitation, and cardiovascular rehabilitation, offering valuable insights and guidance.
This focused approach aims to increase awareness and encourage the integration of gender-specific strategies in rehabilitation practices globally.
